Lavasoft Ad-aware is a great utility to check for malware on your computer such as trojan horses, dangerous cookies, annoying pop up scripts...etc. This little utility will also increase the performance of your PC. The following guide will explain you how to configure and scan your machine.
1. First, download the utility from the following page: click here
2. Install the program. Setup is very simple, just keep pressing "Next" untill its fully installed.
3. Launch the program via the shortcut on the desktop or via
"Start" - "Programs" - "Lavasoft Ad-aware".
4. Good, you will be presented with the following screen as shown below.
5. The first thing to do before scanning is to configure the necessary scan parameters and to see whether there are new updates available. Click on the "Web update" icon located on the top right hand side of the program.
6. Another screen will appear. Now, press the "Connect" button.
Note: Make sure you are connected when using the web update feature.
7. It seems that a new reference file is available. Press "OK" to download it.
8. Excellent, now wait patiently until the update is fully downloaded. Once the download is complete, the program will be fully up to date with the latest definitions.
9. Press "Finish".
10. Now that we have performed the update, lets check on your settings. Click on the "Settings" icon located on the top right hand side.
11. The following screen will appear as shown in the image below. Click on "Scanning".
12. Ok, lets have a look, notice the red icons. Make sure you have the following items activated:
- Scan within archives.
- Scan active processes
- Scan registry
- Deep scan registry
- Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
- Scan my Hosts file
Press "Proceed" when finished.
13. Excellent, we should be back to the main screen. Now, lets select a scanning mode. Activate "Perform smart system-scan" and then press "Next".
14. Wait patiently while the program is scanning your machine. It may take a while so have a cup of coffee in the meantime.
15. It seems that the program has detected 3 suspicious files. Press "Next" to continue.
16. It seems the suspicious files are tracking cookies. Right click on top of any of the boxes, a menu will appear, click on "Select all objects". Press "Next".
Warning: Advanced users may have remote management programs installed that could be detected as malware. Please review all the identified objects so that you are not deleting any of your remote programs.
17. A message will appear informing you about the removal. Press "OK" to continue.
18. The files will now be removed and placed in the quarantine. If you have removed files accidentally, then you can still restore them by clicking on the "Quarantine" icon located on the top right hand side of the program.
That's it. It is suggested to scan your machine at least 1 time a week. Also check for available updates before scanning so that you are using the latest definitions.
